The operation of the ZNT device is such that, with the entry of fresh air, which must have a relative humidity of less than 40 percent in the summer, cooling operations in summer or heating (in winter) take place in the main chamber of the ZNT.

Cooling Operation

The ZNT device is a dual-purpose cooling and heating system, and its cooling system operates similarly to industrial evaporative coolers using the evaporative cooling method.

In this way, city water enters the ZNT device's pad through the piping system, and then, using a pump, the water collected from the ZNT pad is drawn and reaches the nozzle collector.

At this point, the water is evenly distributed and flows over the cellulose pads installed inside the ZNT device through the nozzles. On the other hand, fresh air, which is drawn in by the motor and fan from around the device, passes over the wet cellulose pads and, after cooling, enters the air distribution ducts.

It is emphasized again that the use of any type of ZNT device for cooling air in the summer is only in areas with non-humid air (relative humidity less than 40 percent).

If 100 percent fresh air is used and the required airflow volume for the device is calculated correctly, along with the proper design and execution of air distribution ducts and, of course, the selection of the motor with appropriate power and fan with precise static pressure, it will be effective.

The passage of air through the layers of cellulose pads that have been moistened by water and nozzles results in heat loss and cooling of the air exiting the device through the evaporative cooling process.

Heating Operation

In winter, in residential and office applications, the fresh air inlet vent or window is usually closed, and the return air mainly enters the device through the return duct. On the other hand, hot water enters the ZNT heating coil through the central boiler or heating package via the piping system.

As air passes between the fins of the heating coil installed at the beginning of the distribution duct, the warm air enters the air distribution duct.

Then, after losing its heat in the coil, the hot water is returned through the return pipe to the boiler or heating package. This cycle is continuously maintained during the cold seasons so that hot water is continuously flowing in the ZNT heating coil.

It should be noted that in specific applications where the fresh air inlet duct is somewhat open, especially in educational, medical, and religious centers, fresh air can also be used in winter. In such cases, considering the low temperature of the air in winter, energy consumption and related costs naturally increase.

Filtration System

The structure of these types of filters consists of several layers of aluminum mesh with very fine openings arranged in a honeycomb and sinusoidal pattern so that as air passes over this filter, dust and suspended particles in the air are captured, resulting in clean and pure air.

It should be noted that depending on the type of order and project needs, aluminum filters can have four or five layers, and in addition, for better air filtration and based on the type of order and project needs, special bag filters can also be used in the outgoing air path.

Dehumidification

Dehumidification in ZNT is possible when the temperature of the sprayed water in the device is lower than the wet bulb temperature of the incoming air. The colder the sprayed water, the more effective the dehumidification from the air.

Corrosion Control 

Corrosion control in any metal system that works with water is necessary. Carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, and other corrosive gases can cause serious problems in the device due to dissolving in water.

The combination of these materials forms a mild dilute acid that easily penetrates unprotected surfaces and causes rust and corrosion in the device, characterized by a drop in pressure at the water spray nozzle.

To remedy this situation, a protective and corrosion-inhibiting coating is applied to the metal surfaces, which raises the pH of the water to about 9. This pH level prevents the formation of dilute acids in the water and the growth of bacteria inside the ZNT device.

Odor Control

Given the operation of ZNT devices, which produce cool and pleasant air for our comfort, the air must be clean and free of any odors and pollutants. On the other hand, due to the operation of ZNT devices, the internal surfaces of the devices and the ZNT pad usually become slimy over time and gradually develop an unpleasant odor.

To address this issue, mild oxidizers, such as hydrogen peroxide and bromine, are used (these substances are added to the ZNT basin periodically).
