Mini chillers, where their refrigeration cycle, based on the capacity, has one or more scroll compressors and one or more circuits, are usually installed on the building's terrace or roof. These systems convey water to the building after cooling it in the evaporator. The cooled water, after circulating in the fan coil, provides the cooling conditions required for each interior space of the building.
Mini chillers are usually air-cooled systems with smaller dimensions and capacities. Their function is as follows:
The refrigerant gas is condensed by an air-cooled chiller's compressor. The condensed gas then enters the condenser with high pressure and temperature and cools with water or air and turns into a liquid form. This refrigerant fluid loses its temperature bypassing the expansion valve or the capillary tube, which breaks the fluid pressure, to absorb the water heater inside the evaporator after entering the evaporator coil. Because of the evaporator's less pressure than the condenser, the refrigerant fluid evaporates. The heat required for evaporation is supplied by the water, which is circulating in the air conditioning system inside the evaporator. As a result, the water of the refrigeration system is cooled inside the evaporator and then transported by a circulating pump system to a coil of cool water in fan coils and air handling unit to create a cool air at the desired location. After this process, the evaporation gas returns to the compressor by the suction power, and the cycle continues.
Water in the cooling circuit of the building is cooled by the evaporator or heat exchanger of the mini chillers, which are available in both tube and plate shield types. The evaporator contains both refrigerant gas and refrigeration circuit water pipes. During the evaporation of the liquid in the refrigerator and receiving the heat by gas, the system's water will be cooled. When using a plate heat exchanger, and applying a large number of thin metal plates, the high heat exchange then will be carried out between the hot and cold fluids. The hot and cold fluids are entered from two opposite directions into the converter. Then the fluids flow alternatively between the metal plates, and so the heat exchangers occur.
Compressors are scroll-type in compression mini-chillers. Mini chillers are used in low capacities for a residential unit and their drive is powered by one and/or three-phase urban power.
Air condenser in mini chillers consists of some copper coils with mostly aluminum fans. Cooling operation is carried out by big axial fans.
Some mini-chillers that also have a heat pump can provide the hot water needed by the fan coil in the winter.
In general, besides calculating parameters such as geographical conditions (ambient temperature) and outside summer temperature, altitude above sea level, air relative humidity, type of building usage (indoor design temperature), type of materials used and implementing the building elevation, the angle of the building position to the sun's radiation, number of floors and building foundation area, number of rooms, small and large indoor electrical equipment, etc., the facility experts consider the amount of cold water required and the confidence coefficients in the chiller function as well to calculate the chiller capacity required for each project, which is based on the exact calculation of total cumulative load capacity. But to calculate the total (Phase 1) chiller required for residential and administrative buildings in some climatic conditions (including Tehran), consider the nominal capacity of approximately 6 RT per 100 square meters.
The use of mini chillers with fan coil, besides many benefits, allows using two cooling and heating systems in the fall season for different desires of the building residents.
By installing a mini chiller in old buildings where the central chiller is out of operation and/or not having high efficiency, there is no need to install and use other expensive air conditioning equipment because the fan coil and pipe network are already in the building, and you only need to install a mini chiller to produce optimal cooling.
