As the air gets warmer during the hot seasons, the choice of at least one cooling device in buildings is considered a necessary measure. Gas coolers and evaporative coolers are two of the most common types of cooling equipment. Different types of cooling systems are designed and supplied for this purpose. These two types of equipment differ from each other in some ways, which we will discuss in more detail below. However, the main difference between them is the amount of electricity they use. (Although, unlike gas coolers, evaporative coolers also use water, which is not the subject of this article). A comparison of the electricity consumption of a gas cooler and an evaporative cooler is discussed in the following article. For more information, please read the article to the end.
The distinct difference between a split AC unit and an evaporative cooler
Although Split AC Units and evaporative coolers are all cooling units (split air conditioners also have a heating function, of course), they are very different from each other. There are some important differences between split air conditioners and evaporative coolers:
- The evaporative cooler cools the environment using the evaporative cooling technique, whereas the gas cooler's cooling mechanism is based on the condensation cooling cycle and uses refrigerant gas.
- Evaporative coolers don't have as much cooling capacity as gas coolers and split air conditioners.
- In Sharjah regions, such as the north or south of Iran, the use of evaporative coolers is not recommended. This is due to the increased humidity in the air. However, the A/C unit works by lowering the humidity, which makes it ideal to use in Sharjah's climate.
- Split AC units are priced significantly higher than evaporative coolers, regardless of brand or capacity.
- Evaporative coolers can only cool, and split ac units can often heat.
the variables affecting split AC units' electricity usage
The compressor, which is responsible for condensing the refrigerant gas, consumes a large amount of electricity (from 900 watts for a 12-metre room to 3000 watts for a 50-metre room) and accounts for the majority of an air conditioner's power consumption. Other factors that have an impact on the amount of electricity used by an air conditioner are the following:
- The most significant reduction in electricity consumption is achieved when the split compressor and the air conditioner are set to a temperature of 25 degrees Celsius.
- The split compressor and air conditioner have inverter technology (an inverter compressor with variable speed provides a considerable reduction in electricity consumption).
- The energy label for split systems and split air conditioners includes an energy class. (The best mode should be classified as A, which means the lowest energy-consuming mode).
- The city climate is relevant here. (The hotter the air, the more the air conditioner and split will inevitably work and therefore consume more electricity).
- Different types of walls, doors and windows (conditions such as wall insulation or double-glazed windows can significantly reduce the electricity consumption of split air conditioners and evaporative coolers).
- Use of split air conditioners and ducted splits when energy demand is highest. (Switching on the unit between 11:00 and 16:00 results in higher electricity consumption.)
- By mounting the inner panel of the split cooler 2.2 m above the floor of the desired room, the hot air under the ceiling doesn't have to be cooled by the split cooler.
Factors affecting evaporative cooler power consumption
As previously mentioned, the evaporative cooler is an air cooler that uses evaporation to cool the air (evaporative cooling). (Evaporative coolers operate with a minimal amount of electrical equipment, such as an electric motor and a water pump. The water pump and electric motor of the evaporative cooling unit are both required to generate water pressure in the circuit of the unit, and both types of units consume little electricity (about 20% of the electricity consumed by a similarly sized split unit). The following are some of the variables that affect how much electricity an evaporative cooler uses:
- Regional climate conditions
- Selecting an evaporative cooler with an appropriate energy rating (in the A range)
- Selecting the correct evaporative cooler capacity
- Use an appropriate evaporating media (cellulosic pads are more efficient than paper and reduce the amount of electricity consumed)
- Use the evaporative cooler at peak energy consumption times
- The size and length of the evaporative cooler channel have been calculated and are sufficient. (by reducing the length of the duct, the evaporative cooler will be less active and its power consumption will be reduced)
- Conditions of the desired building isolation
Does the split air conditioner or evaporative cooler consume more electricity?
As we've seen, split air conditioners and evaporative coolers use much more electricity (about four times as much) than evaporative coolers. This is because they include compressors to compress the refrigerant gas. As you can see, it is only the electricity required by the water pump and the electric motor that accounts for the electricity consumption of the evaporative cooler. We have also observed that it is possible to significantly reduce their electricity consumption by taking into account things like not using split AC units and splits during the times when energy consumption is highest, choosing split AC units and evaporative coolers with inverter compressors, taking into account the insulation conditions of the building, etc.
