Many people use an air purifier in their homes and many use a humidifier and even some people use both devices. But what is the difference between the two? What distinguishes these devices from each other? In the rest of this article, we will review the humidifier and the air purifier and answer the mentioned questions to get a better understanding of how these two devices work. It can be said that both of them help improve indoor air and are designed to create better air, but how they work is different. The problem occurs when you don't know which is the best option to meet your needs to choose a suitable device.
Uses and benefits of air purifiers and humidifiers
The working method of the air purifier is actually by using several filters, the device receives the room air and passes it through the filters, absorbs pollutants, airborne particles, allergens, etc., and returns the clean air to the room. Finally, clean air will flow into the room and breathing will be much easier. The increase in air quality using this device helps people with allergies and asthma to breathe more easily. It also prevents children and adults from contracting such diseases, and if you have pets or houseplants, removing dust, bacteria, fungi, etc. can be useful for them as well.
Humidifiers, which are humidifiers, do not perform filtration, but only introduce the necessary moisture (in the form of hot or cold steam) into the air. If the dry air has caused breathing or sinus problems for you, adding moisture to the air will relieve you.

What is an air purifier?
Some people think that the air inside the house or a closed environment is clean, but it is not. Bacteria, viruses, pollutants airborne particles, detergents, etc. enter closed spaces from the outside environment, all of which cause pollution of the air we breathe. Even if we do not suffer from respiratory diseases, it is still important to use an air purifier so that we do not suffer from damage in the long run. The air purifier is responsible for removing pollutants and cleaning the air in the environment.
There are many different devices for air purification in the market, and each manufacturer claims to use a better method in this matter, but it is better to know that all air purification devices generally perform the purification process in two ways. The first and best method is to use several types of filters (which we will explain later) to absorb suspended particles and pollutants in the air, and the second method is to use a UV lamp or ozone gas emission.
Usually, the second method is not recommended and it is better not to use such devices, because in using this method, the pollutants may not be completely decomposed and destroyed, and may become other particles that are harmful and dangerous to human health.
Air purifier filters
Filters used in air purifiers are generally divided into three parts. Primary filter or pre-filter, HEPA filter, and active carbon filter, each of which absorbs a large part of small and large pollutants in the air and provides you with clean air.
- Primary filter or pre-filter: This filter is in the first stage and coarser particles such as hair, fluff, etc. are absorbed through this filter. This will help prevent coarse particles from entering the HEPA and active carbon filters, and their life will be longer.
- HEPA filter: It is the most powerful filter and absorbs up to 99% of particles and pollutants in the environment. This filter can absorb particles as small as 0.3 microns, including bacteria, fungi, viruses, etc. Reputable brands and manufacturers use HEPA filters instead of regular filters.
- Active carbon filter: This filter absorbs chemical pollutants and air odors and acts as a supplement to the HEPA filter. The function of the active carbon filter is to absorb gas and chemical pollutants that are present in many detergents, and cosmetics such as hair dyes, etc. Particles that are absorbed by the HEPA filter and activated carbon never return to the air. Using these two together makes the quality of the air coming out of the device very high.
What is a humidifier?
As its name suggests, the function of the humidifier is to add the required moisture to the air. This device is used in homes and also in industrial affairs such as greenhouses and livestock farms. The domestic version of this device is produced in two modes: hot fumigation and cold fumigation, which is used to warm and humidify the air in the home in winter or to treat colds.
It is also useful for people with respiratory disease and sinus problems. Its cold fumigation is also more useful in the summer season, especially in hot and dry climates, and it is useful for plants inside the apartment in addition to people. Humidifiers have tanks in which you can pour solutions such as eucalyptus to spread in the air and use its benefits.
The industrial type of humidifier can also be used in poultry farms, mushroom growing halls, cold stores, textiles, tea making, laboratories, printing houses, and all places that need regulated and precise humidification.
Types of humidifiers
In general, three types of humidifiers are produced in the world, which are:
- Butterfly humidifier: This is also called a disk humidifier. This type of humidifier is the cheapest model and its downside is that it only works in one space at one time. This device may create too much humidity in the air and this is dangerous for people who have asthma because too much humidity causes fungus to grow. However, this model is a better option for use in mushroom breeding halls, cold storage, and chicken farms.
- Nozzle Humidifier: It is also called a Humidifier or Hose Mist Sprayer. This model is mostly used for greenhouses. In some public places and open spaces, you may have seen hoses stretched like ropes in the air, and very fine water particles come out of them in the form of mist.
- Ultrasonic humidifier: This type is much more advanced and transfers water particles microscopically (very small) to the air. These small particles of water evaporate in the air and in this way it causes the humidity of the air. The ultrasonic humidifier is also used to supply the humidity required by the incubators.
