Normally, cooling equipment that absorbs heat from the air and cools the environment through the refrigeration cycle and refrigerant gas in the coils of its internal unit (evaporator), such as wall-mounted ducted split, split ac unit, fan coil, and air conditioners. In this way, the output temperature of these devices reaches cool and favourable conditions by passing hot air through their internal coil panel (evaporator).
Moreover, when the hot ambient air meets the cold surface of the coil, we face the phenomenon of condensation and the formation of water droplets on its surface. Therefore, it is necessary to prevent these droplets from penetrating the unit, the ceiling, the wall and other internal environments of the building, as they will affect the performance of the unit, ultimately reducing its efficiency and imposing excessive costs on the consumer. For this purpose, a device called a drain pump or a small drain pump installed inside the appliance is used to collect and completely drain the water droplets caused by distillation in refrigeration systems.
Apart from the serious damage mentioned above, the low quality and inadequate performance of the small drain pumps cause water to leak into the false ceiling, causing the roofing to rot and crack. In addition, if the device is close to the electricity and lighting system, it will result in the possibility of serious and life-threatening risks and injuries to people; stay with us to learn more about the sump pump and its use.
Operation of the drain pump
As already mentioned, during the operation of cooling devices such as air conditioners and split units, fan coils, air conditioners, etc., as the warm ambient air passes through the cold coil of the internal unit of the device, the temperature of the outgoing air decreases and humidity decreases. It is also formed as water droplets (due to the condensation phenomenon) on the surface of the evaporator coil.
Depending on the type of unit and its location, as well as the conditions and facilities of the building, it may be possible to remove the distilled water directly and by gravity from the building by installing a pipe system. Otherwise, a small drain pump should be used to prevent the distilled water from entering the unit and damaging it.
The drain pump consists of three components: a tank, an electric motor and a float (some systems use a sensor instead of a float). Drain pumps are designed and manufactured in a variety of types and models, which are selected according to the type of refrigeration equipment being used and how it is to be installed.
Types of drainage pumps
Drainage pumps are available in four models: wall, tank, two-piece and one-piece ceiling. Depending on the requirements and applications, they are used as follows:
The wall-mounted drain pump is normally used to drain the water from the condensate (with a maximum flow rate of 15 litres per hour) of wall-mounted air conditioning units and wall-mounted fan coil units. In addition, this drain pump model can also be used to drain dental units.
The in-tank pump is generally used in floor-standing A/C units, rooftop packages and split ducted units. The flow rate of distilled water in units equipped with a tank drain pump is usually high, up to 400 litres per hour.
The two-piece drain pump is one of the most widely used and is used to drain water from the internal panel pan (with a maximum flow rate of 15 litres per hour), air conditioning systems such as duct split and high capacity ceiling and fan-coil units. The two-piece drain pump has two pump parts and a float chamber with up to 50 ml capacity. The operation of these pumps is such that after a volume of water has been collected in the accumulator, the drain pump starts working upon detection of the floater or sensor and drains the collected water to the outside. One of the peculiarities of this type of pump is that it can be sucked up to a height of 2 metres.
The one-piece ceiling drain pump is one of the most suitable types of drain pump, generally used in split ducts and fan coils. This model is made in one piece and is installed inside the unit's sump, therefore it is made of stainless steel to prevent it from corroding.
How to install a drain pump
The installation of the drain pump in air conditioning units such as floor-standing air conditioners, fan coils, duct spits, air conditioners, rooftop packages, etc. must be done correctly, because if it is installed incorrectly, the water from the distillation of the unit will not be drained properly.
Due to the lack of complete drainage of the water from the condensation in such equipment, the performance of the equipment will undoubtedly decrease and the system could be seriously damaged! Therefore, by following a few simple points regarding the installation of the drain pump, its correct operation can be ensured. Some of these points are as follows
There should be a small gap between the bottom of the still and the drainage pump.
The distance between the drain pump and other parts of the cooling unit should be 10 cm.
Ensure that the drain pump outlet pipe is not blocked.
When the cooling system of the appliance in question is not in use, the water in the drain pump tank must be drained to prevent sedimentation and further damage to the appliance.
If it is necessary to bleed the drain pump, it is recommended to do this through the bleed pipe so that the water can be drained more easily.
