Split AC Unit Selection Tips

Want to use the pleasant coolness of the air conditioner and split to ventilation and cool your desired space but you are not sure of the type, capacity, brand, price, and specifications that suit your purpose? Read on to find the answers to all your questions on price, technical specifications, and the best types of air conditioners and splits.
A split AC unit is among the most common air conditioning equipment and is extensively employed for cooling as well as heating in some cases in various accommodations including offices and residential buildings.

Generally speaking, all split AC units operate based on the vapor compression refrigeration cycle. First, the refrigerant is cooled down in the condenser (the outdoor unit of the AC) and then moved to an expansion valve via copper tubes and then to the coil of the indoor unit in gaseous form, ready for collecting heat from the space. The air passes through the coils of the indoor unit (evaporator) losing heat and reaching a pleasant temperature to provide comfort for residents.

Calculating the Capacity of the Split AC Unit

  1. To approximate the required AC capacity, 400–600 BTU is considered per sq. meter on the middle floors of the building and 600–800 BTU at the top-most floor—due to the direct sunlight irradiating the roof (for example, a 9000 unit is suitable for a 12 sq. meter room, while a 40 sq. meter hall requires a 24000 unit).
  2. You can consult the following table that facilitates finding the approximate required AC capacity based on the conditions and the discussed principles.
Notice: The calculations are approximate and are made assuming a residential building in a climate similar to that of Tehran, with a floor-to-ceiling distance of 2.8 m, no crowding, no increase in the latent heat, no high-consumption electrical equipment, and no structural glass or curtain walls in particular, on the west side of the building.

  3. Before selecting a split AC unit, one must note whether it operates on single-phase or three-phase power and compare its ampere (A) rating with the building’s electric meter.
  4. Our specialists at DamaTajhiz are prepared to provide consultations about any discrepancies between the operational requirements and the discussed conditions.
  5. As it was discussed earlier, in general, split AC units are capable of supplying residents with cool, fresh air in a short time, which makes them popular with consumers.
  6. Floor-standing split air conditioners that generally run on three-phase power are employed in large halls—such as in restaurants, marketplaces, and mosques—and come with outdoor units (condensers) similar to wall-mounted split AC units.

Same way as window AC units, portable air conditioners do not require complicated installation and piping to connect to an outdoor condenser unit.

Advantages of Air Conditioning over Evaporative Cooling

Splits and air conditioners supply a more pleasant flow of air, are capable of filtering the indoor air and removing particulates and suspended pollutants, are quicker in regulating the desired temperature, can be used in a hot and humid climate, provide higher thermal comfort, do not consume massive amounts of water every day, allow for adjusting the output air temperature, may also provide heating (in certain models), do not require sizable piping (as evaporative coolers do), operate noise-free, and are available in attractive designs.
To effectively reduce power consumption by air conditioners and split AC units, always set them at 25 °C. This leads to the consecutive shutdown of the compressor, reducing the costs of electricity. Adjusting the air conditioner at 25 °C is accepted as the most effective solution to reducing power consumption and the associated costs, all the while providing thermal comfort, for all split AC models.

Air Conditioner Capacity and the Concept of BTU

An important factor when purchasing air conditioners is the refrigeration capacity of the equipment which is reported in BTU for example, consider an 18,000 BTU split AC.
The British Thermal Unit (BTU) is a unit of measurement for thermal energy in air conditioning equipment and is the heat required to bring up the temperature of one pound of 60 °F water by one degree.

How Many Types of AC Compressors There Are?

Air conditioners and split AC units may come with one of three types of compressors, namely the Scroll, Reciprocating, or Rotary compressors.
Generally speaking, compressors transform gas into a liquid by pressurizing and reducing the volume of the refrigerant.
The compressor of the AC is, in fact, the engine driving the equipment and is identical to compressors used in the common fridge.
Rotary compressors are most commonly used in modern split AC units while the scroll compressor despite its better performance is rarely employed.

However, it is more or less the manufacturer's task to pay attention to the type of compressor and should not concern the consumer.

What is EER?

EER is Energy Efficiency Ratio or abbreviated as EER.
shows how efficient the equipment is in consuming power for providing refrigeration. The higher the EER, the better the cooler is. The combination of a high EER and a reliable inverter makes a high-efficiency split AC unit.

Types of Refrigerants Used in Air Conditioners and Split Units

In general, three types of refrigerants are used in the split AC unit:

  • Freon™ R22: One of the oldest types of refrigerants, the Freon R22 is now obsolete for its chemical makeup which is detrimental to the ozone layer.
  • Freon™ R410: The high-efficiency refrigerant boasts an eco-friendly chemical composition and is most commonly used in modern inverter air conditioners.
  • Freon™ R407: This type of refrigerant is also high-efficiency and features an eco-friendly formulation but is not as popular as R410.

Notes on Installation

  1. Note that the outdoor unit—the condenser installed out of the building—must be installed on a base made of #3 or #4 structural angle (depending on the capacity), perfectly horizontal, exposed to a stream of fresh air allowing sufficient heat exchange, and allowing access for maintenance and recharging (the procurement costs of the base shall be paid by the customer).
  2. While taking into account the minimum distance between the indoor and outdoor units, try to install the condenser in the shadow to reduce power consumption and enhance the cooling function of the equipment because direct sunlight will heat up the unit. If that is not possible, it is best to use special shades to cover the condenser.
  3. The maximum length of the copper tubes connecting the indoor unit to the condenser, depending on the capacity of the equipment, is between 10 to 22 meters. Please consult our specialists before placing an order if you plan to install the AC in such a configuration as it will drastically reduce the cooling efficiency of the split unit.
  4. In case the existing piping and wiring between the indoor and outdoor units were designed for a previous typical split unit or inverter AC, please inform our consultants of the size of the implemented copper tubes and the piping length between the units before making a purchase.
  5. Given that hot air accumulates under the ceiling, installing the indoor unit further from the top reduces power consumption for cooling while supplying a better flow of air and providing better cooling for the residents.
  6. To prevent potential hazards, such as blowing off the stove, air conditioners or split units should not be installed in the kitchen.
  7. The free installation offered for some air conditioner and split AC models does not cover the costs of shipping, the condenser base, and welding that are to be paid by the customer.
  8. It is also essential to plan ahead for the output water droplets discharged by the indoor unit.

Notice: The most important thing to note as regards maintaining and improving the cooling efficiency of the indoor unit and the air quality is that the integrated electrostatic air filters require monthly washing. With the start of the hot season, when air conditioner usage is at its peak, make sure to regularly wash the filters every month to make the best use of the equipment and prevent potential difficulties during the period. Further, making such arrangements will extend the service life of the device.
