Air conditioners are one of the most used equipment in the air conditioning industry. As you know, air conditioners fall into three categories: normal, hygienic, and heat recovery. Due to the increasing costs and environmental effects caused by energy consumption as well as the loss of a large part of thermal energy, much attention has been paid to thermal recovery. A part of this heat recovery is done in the air conditioning equipment by the heat recovery air conditioner.
Heat recovery air conditioners are similar to normal air conditioners, and the difference is in recovering the energy output from the device. For this reason, there are differences in the structure and performance of heat recovery and normal air conditioners, which we will describe below.

Heat recovery air conditioner structure

In the thermal recovery method, instead of exhausting the outgoing air from the building in the open space, its energy is used for pre-heating or pre-cooling of the incoming fresh air. In this way, energy loss is prevented.
The heat recovery air conditioner is similar to the normal air conditioner, with the difference that it has a two-story structure. So that the lower floor has the same function as a normal air conditioner, but the upper floor includes a heat exchanger (plate), outlet damper, filter, exhaust fan, sensors and controllers.

Performance of the heat recovery air conditioner

The way the air conditioner works with energy recovery in the cooling mode (in the summer season) is that the returned air from the building, which has a lower temperature than the temperature outside the building, enters the heat recovery section from the upper floor of the air conditioner and after passing through the filter It enters the heat exchanger. On the other hand, the hot air entering the device from outside the building also enters from the upper floor and after passing through the primary filter, it enters the heat exchanger. Since the return air has a lower temperature than the temperature of the incoming air from the environment, it absorbs some of the heat of the incoming air from the environment and cools it to some extent. Then, the cooled incoming air passes through the cold water coil (or contains refrigerant) on the lower floor of the main air conditioner and reaches the desired temperature, and by transferring it into the channels and distributing it to the building, the air inside the building is finally cooled.
In the heating mode (in the winter season) the system has the same function as the cooling mode and the only difference is in the heating or heat absorption of the return air flow. Since in the heating mode, the return air flow from the building has a higher temperature than the incoming air from the cold environment, so the return air gives its heat to the incoming cold air, which is somewhat heated. Then the heated air in the upper floor of the air conditioner enters the lower floor of the air conditioner and passes through the coil containing hot water and after being transferred inside, the air inside the building is heated.

Heat exchanger for air conditioners with heat recovery

The heat recovery system of the air conditioner uses a plate heat exchanger for heat exchange between the air leaving the building and the fresh air entering the device. This converter consists of metal plates (usually made of aluminum or copper) with a small gap. The two air streams of input and output are placed between these plates. The complete sealing of these plates prevents the mixing of the two air streams, and as a result, heat exchange takes place between the plates.

Advantages of using heat recovery air conditioner

  • Saving energy and reducing its waste
  • High functional efficiency
  • Reducing the heat load required from the boiler
  • Reducing the cooling load required from the chiller
  • Reducing thermal requirements and also reducing the dimensions of the device
  • Providing healthy air and its positive impact on human health

In conclusion, it should be mentioned that if humidification or complete air purification is needed, this operation can be done in the lower floor of the air conditioner according to the usual conditions in air conditioners.
