Pool lights or projectors are typically made using LED and SMD technology.

The housing of pool lights is available in stainless steel or compressed plastic, and in terms of size, they are usually produced in diameters of 10, 15, 20, and even 30 cm.

Pool lights or projectors with stainless steel bodies are usually multi-color or 7-color types, offering higher power and brightness levels (lux), typically rated at 12 or 18 watts. In contrast, lights with compressed plastic bodies are relatively older and are available either as single-color 6-watt models or multi-color 12-watt versions.

Important Notes on Using Pool Lights

Important points regarding the use of pool lights are as follows:

• Before installing or replacing pool or jacuzzi lights, even though the voltage is 12V, the pool water level must be lowered at least below the light housing so that installation and waterproof sealing at the cable connection can be done properly and safely.
• The number of LEDs in each pool light is usually 3, 6, 12, 15 LEDs, etc.
• Before replacing your old pool light, ensure the transformer in the mechanical room electrical panel is functioning properly.
  When purchasing or replacing pool lights, in addition to diameter and type, consider wiring type (2-wire or 4-wire), light color (blue, white, warm white), frame size, and provide a photo of the previous light to the seller.
• If multi-color pool lights are required, the wiring must be 4-wire or a 2-to-4 wire converter must be used for each light.
• The distance between pool lights depends on their lux (brightness) and is usually considered 3 to 4 meters minimum.
• The installation depth of pool lights should not exceed 30 to 35 cm below the water surface.

Incandescent Pool Lights

In the past, incandescent pool lights were popular among pool equipment, due to their low price and warm golden glow. These lights produce a warm yellow light by heating a filament.
Compact fluorescent (CFL) lamps later replaced incandescent bulbs, but incandescent lights still retain some appeal. When turned on, pool water appears greenish and yellow and blue colors blend attractively.
Today, incandescent pool lights are not economically justified as they usually require replacement twice a year.

Halogen Pool Lights

The advanced generation of incandescent lights are halogen pool lights, which consume about 20% less energy while maintaining strong illumination.
Halogen lights generate much more heat than LED lights, but this heat is absorbed by the pool water, so they must be installed underwater.
Over time, halogen lights have lost popularity due to high cost, intense light, and short lifespan.

Important Installation Guidelines for Halogen Pool Lights

• If the water level drops and halogen lights are exposed to air, excessive heat may deform the light body and water may enter the fixture, reducing brightness and potentially causing burns to swimmers.
• Halogen pool lights must be installed at a depth of at least 40 cm below the water surface to prevent exposure due to evaporation or water draining.

LED Pool Lights

LED pool lights are the most modern type of pool lighting and can be installed both surface-mounted and recessed. They have high efficiency (10–20%) and consume only a fraction of energy compared to other types.
Single-color LED pool lights are usually 12 watts, while 7-color models are typically 18 watts.

Their long lifespan eliminates the need for replacement for several years. Properly installed LED pool lights last over 50,000 hours on average, making them one of the most widely used lighting options. For example, with 30 hours of weekly use, their lifespan can exceed 30 years.
LED pool lights are available in various colors and can be controlled via switch panels, remote controls, or even mobile apps in newer models.

Types of Pool Lights by Installation Method

Pool lights are divided into two types based on installation: recessed (flush mounted) and surface-mounted lights.

Recessed Pool Lights (Flush Mounted)

Recessed pool lights are installed inside a concrete housing in the pool wall, creating a flush surface that enhances the pool’s beauty. Today, RGB recessed LED lights are widely used and highly popular.

Important Notes on Installing Recessed Pool Lights

• The installation location of recessed pool lights must be determined and embedded during the concrete pouring stage of pool construction.
• After pouring the pool shell concrete, an appropriate cable compatible with the light model must be selected and routed inside the pool wall. Ensure enough cable length is left for proper installation and positioning of the light.
• If you intend to use RGB recessed LED pool lights with color-changing capability, 4-core cables must be used from the initial construction stage.
• The most important step after installation is complete waterproofing of the cables inside the pool structure. The connection point between the cable and the pool light must be sealed using waterproof insulation tape. Otherwise, water may penetrate through the cable and damage the light.
• Important note: During installation, the interior of the light housing must NOT be filled with aquarium silicone sealant by the installer, as this reduces water circulation behind the light and can cause the light to burn out within a few months.
• Recessed pool lights are cooled by direct contact with pool water and must be installed at least 30 cm below the water surface, unless otherwise specified by design conditions. Typically, recessed lights are installed at 4 to 6 meter intervals along the length of the pool.
• During cable installation, it is recommended to leave an additional 60 cm cable length to allow future replacement of the light above water level without draining the pool.

Surface-Mounted Pool Lights

Surface-mounted pool lights, as the name suggests, are installed directly on the pool wall (unlike recessed lights, they do not require a housing). These lights are more widely used compared to recessed types and provide a wider light distribution angle.
Installation of surface-mounted pool and jacuzzi lights is easier since no structural modification of the wall is required. Their visible design also enhances lighting harmony in both pool and surrounding areas, creating a special visual effect.

As mentioned, due to variety, aesthetic design, and easy installation, about 70% of pool users prefer surface-mounted pool lights over recessed types.

Safety Notes for Pool Lighting Systems

Generally, for user safety, pool lights, lighting systems, and speakers used in pools are designed with 12V and 24V low voltage systems. Due to the high conductivity of water and humid environment in swimming pools, decorative pools, jacuzzis, dry and steam saunas, there is a high risk of short circuit and electric shock.
Therefore, 220V AC mains electricity is never used for underwater lighting systems, and only 12V or 24V halogen or LED lights are used instead.
As known, the effect of electric shock on a person whose body is partially or fully in water is much more severe than on dry ground. The humid pool environment makes swimmers extremely vulnerable to electric shock hazards because the human body conducts electricity more easily in water, acting as a direct path for current flow.

To prevent life-threatening risks, the following methods are commonly used:

1. Use of low-voltage electrical equipment (12–24V)
2. Equipping electrical circuits with RCD (Residual Current Device) protection
3. Proper insulation and compliance with electrical safety standards
4. Bonding metallic components (pool ladders and handrails, diving boards, pool lights, etc.) to equalize potential differences and isolate circuits
5. Maintaining minimum safe distances for electrical installations around pools
6. Use at least one pool dehumidifier for inddor swiming pools.

Note 1: Minimum distance of overhead cables around outdoor pools must be 6 meters from the pool basin in all directions.
Note 2: Minimum distance of underground cables (buried lines) must be 2 meters from the pool basin (for both indoor and outdoor pools).
Note 3: Minimum distance of electrical sockets and switches from the pool area should be 4 to 5 meters.
